New Jersey Transit has fired its chief compliance officer, Todd Barretta, after only six months on the job. A NJT spokesman declined to say why the agency is parting ways with Barretta, but confirmed to Bloomberg that Barretta was suspended without pay in early August and “he is no longer New Jersey Transit’s chief compliance officer.” The spokesman said NJT will bring aboard a new compliance officer on Aug. 14.
In London, UBS has poached one of the top compliance executives at Barclays. UBS snagged Natasha Meaney; her title will be chief administrative officer for compliance and operational risk, and she will report to UBS global head of compliance and risk James Oates. Meaney spent 10 years at Barclays, and had been chief compliance officer for its investment banking division since 2015. Meaney replaces Lisa Field, who moved to UBS’ investigations team.
Speaking of London, the Bank of England says it will create a new senior executive role to monitor conflicts of interest among bank staff. The move comes several months after the bank sacked deputy director Charlotte Hogg, who left in March for failing to disclose that her brother worked at Barclays. No word yet on who might fill this role.
Sheryl Vacca has resurfaced. We noted last month that Vacca had left her job as chief audit and compliance officer at the University of California. Turns out Vacca is now chief risk officer at Providence St. Joseph Health in Newport Coast, Calif. We thank her for sending us a LinkedIn request.
Jeff Fleming has departed as chief compliance officer at Vertex Pharmaceuticals in Boston. Fleming moved to Philadelphia, which is decidedly less cool than Boston, to be assistant general counsel for GlaxoSmithKline. Fleming had worked at Vertex for 18 months.
Emeka Nwankpah has been named regional compliance counsel for the Americas at Adient, a maker of automotive seats in Michigan. Nwankpah previously was director of ethics & compliance at Kellogg.
Chesapeake Energy has promoted Eric Wilson from internal audit manager to manager of commodity marketing performance and compliance. Wilson has been at Chesapeake for nearly five years.
Over in Taiwan, Chunghwa Telecom has named Fu-Kui Chung chief audit executive. Chung is chairman of Taiwan International Standard Electronics, a subsidiary company of Chunghwa Telecom. Pass your own judgment on the governance propriety of an appointment like that.
Travel insurance firm Generali Global Assistance (“a leader in the assistance industry”) has named Tarik Ajami chief compliance officer and general counsel of its North America unit. Ajami previously was deputy general counsel at AIG.
James Byrne, chief privacy officer at Lockheed Martin, has joined the Department of Veterans Affairs as general counsel. Byrne had been with Lockheed since 2008, and prior to that spent more than two decades working in the federal government. Byrne is also an ex-Marine.
Apologies that we missed this while I was on vacation the other week: FINRA has promoted Susan Schroeder to head of enforcement, and plans to consolidate its existing enforcement wings (there are two) into a single unit headed by her. Schroeder has been with FINRA since 2011.
Down in Florida, West Boca Medical Center has appointed Leisha Peters as the hospital’s compliance officer. Peters comes to West Boca Medical from Miami Children’s Hospital.
PNC has promoted Abigail Mooney, from working in enterprise risk management to being compliance program manager at PNC Institutional Asset Management. Mooney has been with PNC for 18 months, and prior to that worked at Snow Capital Capital Management in Pennsylvania for nine years.
Unifrax, a supplier of industrial products based in Tonawanda, N.Y., has named Joseph Kuchera vice president of product stewardship and compliance. Kuchera had been head of HR for Unifrax, and he will step aside from that role. In his new job, Kuchera will be responsible for corporate compliance programs and will lead interactions with industry associations, regulatory agencies and other government entities.
Ecobank Transnational has named Eric Odhiambo chief risk officer and head of risk management. He joins the bank, based in Togo, in September.
Horizon Air has promoted Brooke Vatheuer, head of internal audit and risk management, to vice president of finance and planning. Horizon is a sister airline to Alaska Air and a subsidiary of the Alaska Air Group.
Piyush Sharma has been named deputy chief compliance officer at Alexion Pharmaceuticals in New York. Sharma comes to Alexion after a few months at Cognizant, and previously spent four years heading up anti-bribery programs as deputy compliance chief at Hess Corp.
Anne-Christine Wegener just joined Commerzbank in Frankfurt (Germany, not Kentucky) as a specialist on the anti-bribery compliance team there. She comes to Commerzbank from GIZ, a German industrial concern.
Citi has promoted Juel McQueen, from senior AML consultant to vice president in the financial intelligence unit.
Vendors & Service Providers
Rohan Virginkar, a prosecutor at the Justice Department who worked on FCPA cases (Teva Pharmaceuticals, among others), is returning to the private sector. He is rejoining law firm Foley & Lardner as partner. Virginkar had been with the department’s Fraud Section since 2011.
Audit executives in Atlanta, take note: Fred Masci just started Masci Internal Audit Placement Services, to fill internal audit jobs in Atlanta. Masci was last seen as head of internal audit at PRGX Global; he left that job in April.
Liza Moore is celebrating one year as compliance manager at Ventura County Credit Union in Los Angeles.
Robert Nolan is celebrating one year as vice president of product compliance and governance at Centene Corp.
Down in Monterrey, Mexico, Andrea Gonzalez just hit one year as a compliance officer for Western Union.
Andrew Fleming is celebrating one year as global AML risk framework manager for HSBC. He’s based in London.
In Lagos, Nigeria, Solomon Abiakalam is celebrating one year as head of financial crime compliance for Standard Chartered in West Africa.
Edward Hill is celebrating five years as chief accounting officer at Cub Energy in Houston.
