Compliance Jobs Report: March 30

The Compliance Jobs Report this week begins with a few announcements of data protection officers, to comply with the forthcoming GDPR. We also have a new CCO at Howard University, a new chief auditor at the AICPA, and work anniversaries at Sutter Health, Capital One, and the Nature Conservancy. And don’t forget our Compliance Meme of the Week!

I gather these bits of information from LinkedIn, news alerts, and friends emailing me something to include. If you have a tip to pass along, email me at [email protected] or find me on LinkedIn. This report depends on people like you helping me, so send some news. Read on…

Compliance Jobs News

We start with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. Microsoft has named its first data protection officer (as required under the GDPR), a software engineer and privacy program manager by the name of Steve May. May will be based in Dublin and report to Julie Brill, deputy general counsel and former commissioner at the Federal Trade Commission.

Along similar lines, the Dubai-based transportation firm Marcura announced that it will outsource the DPO function (you can do that) through the consulting firm Ten Intelligence Ltd., and the outsourced DPO will be Richard Bell. Bell will work with Marcura’s in-house data protection specialist Peter Meyer, who works in Marcura’s legal and compliance function.

We will probably see more DPO announcements in the future. Interesting to see companies staffing out the job in various ways, from IT specialists to lawyers.

We missed this until now, but Mustafa Hersi started work as chief compliance officer of Howard University in January. Hersi also oversees compliance for Howard University Hospital. He comes to Howard from Strayer University, where he was associate general counsel; and his hiring was one of several steps Howard took after a financial scandal that led to the firing of six employees.

As you may have seen last week, Wells Fargo is sending four of its top risk executives into retirement. Compliance JobsPurdue Pharma has promoted Lisa Miller to head of corporate social responsibility, a new position at the company. Miller previously headed up enterprise risk management at Purdue and has been with the Connecticut company since 2001.

The AICPA has named Robert Dohrer its next chief auditor. Dohrer will come to the AICPA from audit firm RSM International, where he is head of quality and risk; he will join the AICPA in October. Dohrer replaces Chuck Landes, the AICPA’s longtime chief auditor who plans to retire in 2019.

Shetikee Ware just took a job as director of quality management at Kindred Healthcare in Tampa, Fla. Ware comes to Kindred from WellCare Health Plans, where she was manager of quality improvement.

Darlene Sovey has been named corporate compliance officer at Rome Memorial Hospital in Rome, N.Y. Sovey comes to the hospital from Central New York Cardiology, where she was executive director. She reports to Manon Gouse, the hospital’s chief quality officer.

The wonderfully named Peapack-Gladstone Financial, a community bank based in New Jersey, has promoted chief risk officer Timothy Doyle to executive vice president. Doyle joined the bank in 2016 as head of risk.

And for those fans of overseas news, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan has named two new commissioners: Shaukat Hussain, already an official at the SECP; and Shauzab Ali, a banker with previous experience at the Asian Development Bank.
