Compliance Jobs Report: March 15
The Compliance Jobs Report start this week with an update on Jay Jorgensen, former head of compliance for Walmart; plus new heads of compliance at St. Louis University, Dash Technologies, and elsewhere. We have three intriguing job posts to note, and our Meme of the Week goes out to everyone struggling with data analytics.
I gather these bits of information from LinkedIn, news alerts, and friends emailing me something to include. If you have a tip to pass along, email me at [email protected] or find me on LinkedIn. This report depends on people like you helping me, so send some news! Read on…
Compliance Jobs News
First, we have news of Jay Jorgensen, last seen in December departing Walmart after six years as global ethics and compliance chief there. Jorgensen just turned up at Coupang, a South Korean e-commerce firm, where he will be general counsel and chief compliance officer. Coupang is a venture capital behemoth, with $3.4 billion in private funding and a valuation near $9 billion — so one can’t help but wonder whether the company will soon go public, and Jorgensen will make gobs of money in an IPO payout. Then again, Jorgensen is a great guy and did great things at Walmart, and we all have to pay the kids’ college tuition somehow. More power to him.
Speaking of startups, fintech firm Dash Technologies has named Venu Palaparthi chief compliance officer and head of regulatory affairs. Palaparthi comes to Dash from Tagomi Holdings, a brokerage for cryptocurrency investors, where he worked for a year as chief compliance officer. Prior to that he spent a few years as head of regulatory affairs at Virtu Financial.
Jessica Evenson just took over as vice president for ethics and compliance at St. Louis University. She previously spent four years as head of institutional compliance for the University of Minnesota.
Promoted: Ali Lyons, at Aegerion Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, Mass. (hometown of Radical Compliance!), to senior director of ethics and compliance. Lyons has been with Aegerion one year.
Lateral move: Karen Abbott has taken a job as chief compliance officer at American Addiction Centers in suburban Nashville, Tenn. She previously held the CCO role at Diversicare Healthcare Services, another Nashville-area healthcare firm.
Atlas Senior Living, a senior care business based in Birmingham, Alab., has promoted Abbey Reach to director of compliance. Reach has been with Atlas since 2016.
And in regulator world, the head of New York City’s Business Integrity Commission, which oversees private trash collection in the city, is stepping down. Dan Brownell had been head of the BIC since 2014, and like so many other NYC regulators, he was needled in the media for various oversight lapses. Look for him to turn up at a security or compliance consulting firm sometime soon.
Also in regulator world: Andrew Weissmann, the No. 2 person on special counsel Robert Mueller’s team, is expected to step down soon to take a teaching job in New York later this year. Weissmann previously had been head of the Fraud Section at the Justice Department.
Milestones
Just want to note that the always lovely Ellen Hunt, head of audit, ethics, and compliance at AARP, was one of numerous people feted at Ethisphere’s World’s Most Ethical Companies gala dinner this week — and her staff somehow smuggled confetti cannons into the dinner and shot them off in her honor. We should all be so loved by our staff.
Vendors and Service Providers
No vendor news this week because they were all too busy attending audit or compliance conferences to announce new products or customer wins.
