Compliance Jobs Report: June 9
The Compliance Jobs Report this week has news from First Republic Bank, a departure at Qualcomm, new hires at Fidelity and Eaton Corp., promotions at numerous other companies, and more. Also a wee bit of consolidation among compliance vendors, plus job leads in biotech, retail, and auditing.
As always, thank you to all the compliance people sending me tips and links to keep this report going. We need your help to make the Report work, so send me some news! If you have a tip to pass along, email me at mkelly@radicalcompliance.com or find me on LinkedIn.
Compliance Jobs News
This week we begin with First Citizens Bank, the firm that ended up buying much of Silicon Valley Bank’s assets after SVB’s collapse in March. First Republic promptly laid off hundreds of SVB employees, but it looks like Doug Seefus, who had been SVB’s head of employee conduct compliance, survived the ax. He now holds that same employee conduct compliance role for First Republic.
Next, a notable departure at Qualcomm: after 15 years there, Deborah Barrett is leaving the company. Barrett had been Qualcomm’s vice president of global compliance and business resilience since last year, and chief compliance officer before. Barrett posted a gracious farewell note on LinkedIn with a cryptic, “Time to move on to the next chapter!” at the end. We’ll stay tuned to see what that chapter may be.
Pharmaceutical giant Takeda has promoted Kelly Tope, from ethics and compliance lead for U.S. monitoring and transparency to head of compliance for U.S. ethics, compliance, monitoring, and reporting. Tope has been with Takeda for three years.
Better Life Partners, an addiction treatment center in New Hampshire, has hired Wendy Henoch as head of quality and compliance. Henoch comes to Better Life (based in lovely Hanover, N.H., certainly befitting the company name) after five years at OhioGuidestone, where she had been director of compliance.
Ashley DiGiammatteo has joined Dental Intelligence, a business that provides analytics and automation software to dental practices (I love this job just to see the wide world of businesses out there), as compliance manager. DiGiammatteo joins Dental Intelligence from Work Shield, an investigations software firm, where she had been director of ethics and compliance.
Aledade, a primary healthcare organization based in Maryland, has promoted Amy Youtz from director of compliance to senior director. Youtz has been with the company for two years.
Scott Garland has joined Fidelity Investments as associate general counsel. Garland previously worked at Affiliated Monitors as managing director for its practice in sanctions, fraud, and ethics and compliance; and prior to that he was an assistant U.S. attorney working on cyber issues. Also known for picking up the tab at Boston Compliance Meetup gatherings, so really he should be at the top of this week’s report.
In California, the County of San Diego has promoted Branden Butler to be the new director for the county’s Office of Ethics, Compliance and Labor Standards. Butler joined the office in early 2022 as deputy director.
Andrew Welcome has left his job as vice president of ethics, compliance, and operations at HCA Florida Mercy Hospital; to take a new job as chief operating officer at LewisGale Medical Center (another hospital within the HCA Healthcare empire) in Virginia.
Paula Boustani has joined Eaton Corp. as ethics and compliance counsel for its Mexico operations. Boustani previously worked at Gonzalez Calvillo, a law firm in Mexico, as a senior associate. She also just wrapped up a degree in ethics and compliance from the University of Mendoza, so it sounds like she’s off to a good start in this profession.
In South Africa, Bianca Buys has a new job as compliance manager for business and market conduct at Rand Merchant Bank. Buys comes to RMB after six years at Standard Bank Group, where most recently she had been head of regulatory compliance for the bank’s Africa business.
In Saudi Arabia, Najm Company for Insurance has promoted Zainab Almutairi from AML and anti-terrorism manager to head of AML and financial crimes compliance. Almutairi has been with Najm since last year.
And we have another audit executive on a corporate board! First, Julie Simpson, chief audit executive at eBay, has joined the board of Adevinta, a European online classified ads publisher that had previously acquired eBay’s classified ads business.
Milestones
Not sure if this is a career milestone or a gravestone, but: Steven King, former chief compliance officer for diabetes medical company A1C Holdings, was convicted of fraud charges this week in a Florida federal district court. King had been CCO of the company from 2013 until 2020. Prosecutors had charged him with participating in a scheme to over-bill Medicare by some $50 million. He now faces up to 20 years in prison; sentencing to come later this year or early next.
Josh Aubey is celebrating one year as chief compliance and privacy officer at WellBe Senior Medical.
Bright times for Becki Berkeley, who just hit one year as compliance manager at SunRun.
Jayati Chaudhury is celebrating one year at Bancorp, where she is head of financial crimes surveillance and investigations.
Mary Eastwood Jones is celebrating one year as head of the Office for Internal Oversight at the World Trade Organization.
Monica Reinmiller is celebrating one year at Panasonic North America, where she is head of global compliance and ethics.
David Wolfe just hit one year at cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike, where he is senior counsel for ethics and compliance.
Vendors & Service Providers
A wee bit of consolidation in the vendor world this week, with two acquisitions to note.
Traliant, a provider of online compliance training, has acquired Clear Law Institute, another company that provides compliance and ethics training. Purchase price not disclosed, which is a total bummer.
StarCompliance, a provider of cloud-based compliance technology software, has acquired Ethix360, another provider of compliance and risk management software. Again with no purchase price disclosed!
Open Req Orders
Ginkgo Bioworks, a biotech company, is looking for a senior manager of internal audit and compliance. Job is based in Boston; salary listed at $125,000 per year.
Qurate Retail Group, owner of Zulily, QVC, Home Shopping Network, and other brands, is looking for a director of ethics and compliance. Job is based in West Chester, Penn. Looks like the corporate website has been advertising the job for six weeks, and the company just re-upped it on LinkedIn. Maybe a leading candidate just bailed or the hiring VP was on leave or something; take that information as you will.
KPMG is looking for a director of ethics and compliance risk control evaluation. This is an in-house job for KPMG’s own ethics and compliance function, not a role on the consulting side (and so, hopefully, less exposed to the layoffs at the Big 4 these days). Job can be based in numerous cities where KPMG has an office. Be sure to look for a location where state law requires KPMG to list the salary range, then stick to that no matter what city you pick.
