Compliance Jobs Report: Dec. 13

Lots of news in the Compliance Jobs Report this week. We have changings of the guard at Liberty Mutual and Toyota, a new CCO at Edward Jones, new hires at RTX, Medexus, and elsewhere; plus a slew of promotions at other companies. Job leads are in pharma, healthcare, and financial services; and Meme of the Week goes out to the Grinch!

Always remember that we need your help to make the Report work, so send me some news! You can easily find updates from your LinkedIn contacts by visiting the My Network tab on your own profile and then checking the Stay in Touch option at the top of that page.

We also take any other gossip you might have, even confidentially. If you have a tip to pass along, email me at mkelly@radicalcompliance.com or find me on LinkedIn.

Compliance Jobs

This week we begin with a changing of the compliance guard at Liberty Mutual, the insurance giant famed for those annoying emu commercials on TV. Karen Morton, the firm’s global chief compliance officer since 2019, has announced that she will retire at the end of March. Succeeding her as global chief compliance officer will be Nicole Arangio, a long-time LiMu executive who has been chief compliance officer for global risk solutions since last year. Arangio has held various ethics and compliance roles at the firm since the 2000s.

We have another changing of the guard at Toyota Motor Corp. in Japan. Jun Nagata, who had been the company’s chief risk and compliance officer, resigned late last month. Toyota will now split his duties among two current executives there; Yoji Matsuyama will take over as chief compliance officer, and Takanori Azuma will assume the chief risk officer duties. Both men will operate within Toyota’s larger HR and administrative teams

R.J. O’Brien, a futures brokerage and clearing firm based in Chicago, has hired John Robbins for the newly created role of global chief compliance officer. Robbins was previously chief compliance officer at Apex Fintech Solutions for two years. In this new job, he will oversee all the compliance officers at RJO’s various business units.

Medexus Pharmaceuticals has hired Richard Sun as compliance officer and associate general counsel. (Technically he is associate general counsel and compliance officer, but the compliance officer part always comes first in the Jobs Report.) Sun joins the company, which makes drugs for cancer, blood disorders, and other illnesses, from AstraZeneca, where he most recently had been associate director of ethics and compliance.

The hiring craze at RTX Corp. continues! First, the defense contractor (which, let’s remember, had a huge misconduct settlement just the other month) just tapped Maria Sonin to be associate director of ethics at its biggest unit, Raytheon. Sonin comes to Raytheon after six years at BAE Systems as ethics program manager.

Second, Julie Donahue transferred from RTX’s Pratt & Whitney division, where she most recently had been director of logistics and readiness, into Raytheon as director of “TINA compliance.” TINA stands for “Truth in Negotiations Act” and basically means anti-price gouging — one of the numerous offenses RTX settled with federal prosecutors.

BECU, a credit union in Washington that started as a service for Boeing employees, has hired Michelle Brewer as senior compliance manager. Brewer comes to the business after nine years at United Community Bank, where she had been head of fair and responsible banking.

Kevin Teodoro has joined Good American, a women’s fashion brand, as senior manager of import and customs compliance. Teodoro previously worked at REEF, a footwear brand, where he also had been senior manager for customs compliance.

Petrofac has named Anders Meex Hvashovd chief compliance officer. This is not a huge surprise; Hvashovd had been interim CCO at the British oilfield services giant since June.

Helen Krushave has joined Lloyds Banking Group as head of compliance for “complaints and rectifications,” an awesome job title. Krushave comes to Lloyd’s after 11 years at Tesco Bank, where most recently she was head of compliance and the designated data protection officer.

Sanofi has hired Kelly Tope as head of ethics and business integrity governance. Tope will work from Sanofi’s U.S. headquarters in Cambridge, Mass., about six blocks away from her previous employer: Takeda Pharmaceuticals, where she was head of business ethics and compliance reporting.

Leica Biosystems, maker of cancer diagnostic equipment, has hired Martin Klee as a senior manager for global trade compliance. Klee previously worked at Flexsys for two years handling global trade issues there.

Payments firm Block has hired Charlie Sashington as testing and monitoring manager for the compliance program. Sashington comes to Block from First Citizens Bank, where he had been audit project manager for two years.

Eightcap, an online securities trading platform in Australia, has hired Warren Kamara as head of AML compliance. Kamara had been working at a consulting firm for a few months, and prior to that was head of financial crimes compliance at BankVic.

Another from Australia: Scott Kieran is apparently stepping down as chief audit executive at Westpac, one of the largest banks in the country. Not sure of the details on that yet; Kieran had been CAE there since 2019.

And a stealth announcement from Edward Jones, the financial services firm: it hired Jennifer Grego earlier this fall as chief compliance officer. Grego comes to Edward Jones, which apparently kept her hiring under wraps until now, after nearly 25 years at Morgan Stanley in various roles. Most recently Grego had been chief compliance officer for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management.

Moving Up the Ladder

Amazon has promoted Marco Sandoval from technical vehicle expert to audit and compliance manager.

Ascensus, a back-end provider of financial services, has promoted Mary Hultman from compliance manager to director of compliance.

Citibank has promoted Farshad Sagarwala from vice president of AML compliance execution to senior vice president for the same task.

Commonwealth Bank, one of the largest banks in Australia, has promoted Emma McDonald from executive manager of compliance to head of compliance for transactional banking.

Discover Financial Services has promoted Heather Monteith from senior manager for compliance to compliance director.

EnergyRe has promoted Stephanie de Garrick from senior corporate paralegal to corporate governance and compliance manager.

Fresenius Medical Care has expanded the role of Mridul Mehta, from compliance business partner for Asia-Pacific to compliance business partner for Asia-Pacific, Middle East, and Africa. Mehta himself is based in India.

Wellington Management has promoted Ihsan Speede from chief compliance officer for the Americas to chief compliance officer and head of global funds compliance.

And American Express has promoted Jennifer Fogelson from membership executive to compliance analyst. Welcome to the profession, Jennifer!

Vendors and Service Providers

Compliance vendor EQS has acquired the ethics and compliance business formerly known as Convercent. Convercent had been acquired by GRC software giant OneTrust in 2021, but OneTrust never really managed the integration of the business unit very well. EQS is much more aligned with the ethics and compliance sector, but is based in Europe; so scooping up the remnants of Convercent is a logical way for EQS to enter the U.S. market.
